Where for Art Thou?

Budding young artists from a Shrewsbury school swapped the blackboard for the easel when they visited Shrewsbury Market Hall last month.

Year One pupils from Woodfield Infant School, Copthorne, visited the Market Hall Art Gallery on March 22.

The trip came ahead of an exhibition of the children’s artwork, which goes on show at the Market Hall Art Gallery from April 1 to 14, showcasing a collection of pieces from the school’s River Severn project.

The children also had a chance to look around the Market Hall and meet some of the traders.

The visit was organised by Visual Art Network, which runs the gallery.

Keith Ashford from Visual Art Network, which runs the market gallery, said: “The children had a chance to look around the gallery ahead of their exhibition which will include a flowing model of the River Severn built as part of their project.

“As well as the exhibition, we will also be holding a workshop on April 2 when participants can make model boats to float on the river display. It’s open to all ages and children will find it fun. Materials will be supplied.”

Franky Giani, a teacher at the school said: “We had a lovely morning at the market hall. All the stall holders were very friendly and the children loved chatting to them.”

Kate Gittins, site facilities manager at the market added: “The children really seemed to enjoy their visit to the market and we look forward to welcoming them back for the workshop and exhibition.’

The exhibition and workshop is funded from a grant from the Severn Loop Local Joint Committee. The grant was awarded to the Visual Art Network to support the promotion of local artists, encourage local community participation in the arts with a central aim of increasing footfall into the Market Hall.
