Shropshire Council

About Shropshire Council

Shropshire Council is the unitary authority responsible for delivering a wide range of public services across the county of Shropshire, including the town of Shrewsbury. As the single tier of local government, it combines the responsibilities that were previously divided between county and district councils, ensuring that services are planned, coordinated, and delivered efficiently across both urban and rural communities.

The Council’s key areas of responsibility include education, highways, transport, waste and recycling, adult social care, children’s services, public health, planning, and environmental services. It also manages cultural and heritage facilities, libraries, and certain economic development initiatives. Shropshire Council is responsible for maintaining major infrastructure, overseeing housing needs, and working to protect the county’s unique natural and historic environment.

For residents of Shrewsbury, Shropshire Council works alongside Shrewsbury Town Council to deliver complementary services. While the Town Council focuses on local amenities such as parks, play areas, allotments, and community events, Shropshire Council delivers the broader statutory services that impact everyday life across the county. Through partnership working, both councils aim to ensure that Shrewsbury remains a thriving, safe, and attractive place to live, work, and visit.
