This team carries out burials and maintenance at Longden Road Cemetery under contract from the site owners, Shropshire Council. Digging the deep, narrow holes for graves requires specialist training and equipment to prevent collapses. Whilst the west side of the cemetery is fairly formal, with mown lawns and clipped hedges, the east side is only cut once per year in most areas and has become a home for a vast array of wildlife. Yellow rattle, hawkbit and wild strawberry can all be found flowering in the summer and the long vegetation gives food and cover to many animals including an incredible 129 different species of moth found on a recent survey!
