Traders Raise Funds for Comic Relief

Traders at Shrewsbury’s indoor Market Hall have raised almost £300 for Comic Relief.

The market joined thousands of other organisations, businesses and individuals ‘doing something funny for money’ on March 18.

A whole host of fundraising activities took place, including the sale of specially made Red Nose Day gingerbread men from bakers TO Williams and a market-wide ’round up to a pound’ campaign.

There was also a special book and pictures clearance sale at the Market Book Stall, 50 per cent of each sale going to Comic Relief.

Traders raised a grand total of £290.

Kate Gittins, site facilities manager at the Market Hall said: “We are so pleased to have raised this fantastic amount for Comic Relief, our traders certainly proved they have a nose for fundraising!

“I would especially like to thank Susan Caroline, from Pengwern Books, for coming up with so many wonderful ideas, Mike and Jean Jones for donating 50 per cent of their takings from their one day book sale, David Embrey and Noreen Maddox for their donations and John Bliss Ltd for persuading so many of their customers to round up to a pound.”

Comic Relief was founded in the United Kingdom in 1985 by the comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis and Alexander Mendis.

The 2011 appeal has raised more than £74 million so far for disadvantaged people here in the UK, as well as in some of the poorest countries in the world, with amounts still rolling in.
