Young people in Shrewsbury will have access to a range of clubs and facilities following the official launch of Shrewsbury Town Council’s youth provision later this month.
This follows funding from Shropshire Council, which has commissioned the Town Council to provide a range of services.
A newly appointed team of youth workers will launch weekly sessions at Flaxivity, Spring Gardens, on Monday evenings from January 18, The Grange Youth Centre on Tuesdays from January 19 and Sundorne Youth Centre on Wednesdays from January 20.
Sessions at New Lodge Youth Centre in Monkmoor will start a week later and will be held on Thursday evenings from January 28.
All sessions are aimed at youngsters in Years 7, 8 and 9 and run from 6.30pm until 8.30pm. Registration is required either by dropping in to a centre, or via telephone/email to Adam Purnell on 07710 717 063 or email adam.purnell@shrewsburytowncouncil.gov.uk
In addition, the Council is providing funding to Trinity Youth to provide sessions at Meole Brace.
Two teams dedicated to detached youth work have also been established and they will work with young people in their communities throughout the town.
The Town Council is committed to establishing two consultative groups in the area. One will seek to bring all the other providers together to ensure close liaison and coordination. The other will comprise young people to ensure that their needs are met and their interests provided for.
Alan Mosley, Leader of the Council said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this provision so as to protect and promote such valuable services for our young people. We have a very strong team of people with excellent experience of working with youth in a good variety of settings. Once settled in we will go on to review opportunities to provide enhanced support, especially in areas of interest identified by young people themselves.”
Adam Purnell, Youth & Community Development Worker heading up the new youth team added: “I am both delighted and excited to be working with staff who can offer such a variety of experience to this new service. There is a real buzz of enthusiasm about the team, who cannot wait to begin working with young people and listening to their ideas so that we can develop a service that best suits their needs.”
