Town Council Supports Local Church in Bid to Win Heritage Award

Shrewsbury Town Council has expressed its delight after a town church was shortlisted for an English Heritage Angel Award.

The annual English Heritage Angel Awards, founded by Andrew Lloyd Webber and supported by the Telegraph, celebrate the efforts of local people who have saved historic buildings and places.

St Alkmund’s Church is shortlisted for the Best Rescue or Repair of a Historic Place of Worship category and is up against St James’s Restoration Fund and Parochial Church Council for Church of St James the Greater, Melton Mowbray, Leicester, Saltaire United Reformed Church, Bradford, Yorkshire and St Andrew’s Church, Epworth, Lincolnshire.

Members of the public can vote for their favourite entry at www.english-heritage.org.uk

The winners will be revealed at a glittering awards ceremony in London on 21 October.

The event will be hosted by TV presenter, Paul Martin.

Helen Ball, Town Clerk said: “The Town Council is delighted to hear that our friends at St Alkmund’s have been shortlisted for this prestigious award and we pass on our sincere congratulations. We would like to encourage members of the public to back their local church and register their vote with English Heritage.”
