Town Council Support for Local Businesses

Shrewsbury Town Council has pledged to back local businesses in light of the ongoing economic crisis.

The Coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown has seen many businesses in Shrewsbury and Shropshire struggle with some being challenged by declining order books and many closing operations down to protect their workforce and many business have become fearful of the future.

To show its commitment to help, the Town Council has advertised its application process for local businesses to be added to their contractor list.

From machinery oil to photocopier paper; professional services to the supply of PPE, the Town Council purchases many goods and services annually to ensure the services it provides and the facilities it owns are kept running.

In unprecedented steps, the Town Council has agreed to support local businesses in gaining local contracts. So it would like more to register to be included on their list of local contractors.

The Leader of the Town Council, Councillor Alan Mosley, said “It is really important in a time like the present that we take significant steps to supporting local businesses.  We already use local contractors where we can but there is always more we can do.

“Not only will this help ensure that order books are full locally but it will also go towards our commitment to carbon neutrality by 2030.  Buying goods and services locally is good for the economy and good for the environment.”
