Town Council’s Plea for Caution Following Blaze

Shrewsbury Town Council has issued a plea to members of the public to exercise caution following a blaze which ripped through one of its straw fields this afternoon. [THURS]

Two fire crews from Shrewsbury, and a pump from Minsterley, were sent to tackle the blaze which was situated off Haycock Way.

The incident, which was thought to have been started by a piece of discarded glass, began at around 2.15pm and affected an area equivalent to half the size of a football pitch.

Firefighters were sent to the scene to carry out damping down and to prevent the fire spreading.

The blaze was out by 3pm.

Helen Ball, Town Clerk said: “A lot of our Countryside Sites are within the urban area and, as such, are intrinsically pre-disposed to litter. However, I would urge members of the public to exercise caution when discarding items such as glass, matches or cigarette butts as these can be hazardous to our open spaces. Luckily, thanks to the fast action of the fire service, the blaze at Haycock Way was under control within an hour but it could have been much worse, especially in these tinder-dry conditions.”
