There’s Still Time to Make your Nominations for Mayor’s Awards

There’s still time to get your nominations in for the annual Mayor’s Awards.

Nominations are being sought to acknowledge those unsung heroes who have made an outstanding contribution to the town of Shrewsbury.

The Mayor is asking businesses, organisations and residents to provide suggestions for Shrewsbury’s annual civic awards, designed to highlight those who have gone above and beyond for the benefit of the town.

She is inviting nominations in a range of categories, which will then be whittled down to a shortlist with the winners revealed on Wednesday 9 May at the town’s Guildhall.

The categories are:

Built Heritage Award – acknowledges the achievements of individuals, organisations and companies that own buildings in Shrewsbury and have worked towards enhancing the built heritage.

Business Award – acknowledges the work of businesses, organisations and individuals who have contributed to the economy of the town, be it through providing job opportunities, business expansion or general promotion and marketing of the town.

Courtesy Award – recognition of achievements towards promoting Shrewsbury as a friendly and courteous place.

Community Award – acknowledges the work of community groups and individuals who have contributed to the social well-being of the town, from major community projects to someone who looks out for their neighbours.

Environmental Award – acknowledges the work of organisations, community groups and individuals who have contributed to enhancing the environment, from major recycling initiatives to organising litter picking events.

Tourism Award – acknowledges businesses, individuals, groups and organisations who have contributed to tourism within the town.

Youth Award – acknowledges the work of schools, groups and individuals who have contributed to the well-being of young people within the town.

In addition to these seven categories, which will be judged by a panel of members and officers of the Town Council, the Mayor will also present her special Commendation Awards. These are awards that are personal to the Mayor, presented to people she has met throughout her Mayoral Year who have played a key part in helping make Shrewsbury a special place to live and work.

Helen Ball, town clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council, said: “It is such a privilege to be able to acknowledge those wonderful people who do so much for our great town.  The Mayor’s Awards is the town’s recognition of the work people do behind the scenes without expecting any thanks. So I would urge everyone to get thinking and put forward your local unsung hero and let the Town Council have those nominations as soon as possible.”

Nomination forms are available to download from the Town Council’s website at www.shrewsburytowncouncil.gov.uk  or for a hard copy contact the Mayor’s Secretary on 01743 257655 or email carol.pullen@shrewsburytowncouncil.gov.uk

The closing date for completed entries is April 9.
