Temporary Closure of Quarry Play Area

The Quarry play area (infant section) in Shrewsbury will be closed for health and safety reasons until further notice following a suspected drain collapse.

The drain runs from the Quarry swimming baths underneath the playground site.

Officers from Shrewsbury Town Council became aware of the problem earlier today [June 1] while carrying out a routine check of the site.

Shropshire Council, which runs the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre, has been notified.

An investigation by Severn Trent is now underway.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Peter Nutting said: “It’s unfortunate that we have had to close the Quarry play area, especially over the jubilee weekend, due to reasons beyond our control. We are working with our partners at Shropshire Council to get the situation resolved as soon as possible.”

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said: “Our staff at the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre have changed the timing and reduced the volume of water to the drains to try and alleviate the problem. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we are working closely with the town council and Severn Trent to reopen the play area as soon as possible.”

The junior section of the play area remains unaffected.
