The mayor-making ceremony, which was held at Theatre Severn, saw Councillor Baker take over the role of civic leader from outgoing Mayor, Councillor Jon Tandy.

Councillor Miles Kenny was also appointed as Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Baker said she would bring an ‘honest and open outlook’ to her year as Mayor.

“I take on this role with some trepidation, but also with a great deal of pride, she said. “Shrewsbury is my home, I was born here but not bred, I moved around, but like most of my family we were drawn back. The experience and knowledge I have gained by living and working in other towns and countries ensures I have an honest and open outlook, and this I plan to bring to my year as Mayor.

“I want to continue to work with local businesses, of all sizes and types. We are lucky in our town to have such a diverse selection of small businesses which include many individual and exciting shops, big attraction for visitors coming to our town. Because, of course, tourism is a big business for a town like Shrewsbury. We have so much to offer, and I look forward to helping to build on all we have achieved so far.”

Councillor Baker also named her two nominated charities for the year; Shrewsbury Ark & The Hive.

She said: “My background has always included the arts in some form. I believe very strongly in the power of creativity however it is expressed. It works in all areas of our life, improves health and well-being, gives confidence to all both young and old and allows you to express feelings and thoughts some can find difficult.”

Councillor Baker will now be officially sworn in at a civic service held at St Chad’s Church on Sunday. [MAY 18]

The service will start at 10am and will be preceded by a parade from the castle to St Chad’s, departing at approximately 9.35am, by way of Castle Street, Pride Hill, Shoplatch, Bellstone, St. John’s Hill and St. Chad’s Terrace, led by the Shrewsbury Brass Band.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Following the church service the traditional Loving Cup ceremony will take place at which the Mayor will be invited to drink from the Loving Cup and toast the Queen and town. The congregation will then be invited to share the toast.
