Shrewsbury to Compete for Champion of Champions Title

Shrewsbury’s floral masters were celebrating this weekend after the town achieved Gold in the national Britain in Bloom contest, as well as being nominated to go forward to compete for the title of Champion of Champions – the ultimate Bloom title – next year.

As well as scooping a Gold award, and winning the Small City Category, Shrewsbury also achieved the mantle of Best Public Park for the Dingle.

The results were announced at a ceremony held in Cleethorpes on Saturday. [OCT 12]

The judges’ comments cited the Dingle as a “testimony to a dedication to the horticultural tradition.”

If anyone wants to witness horticulture at its very finest, harking back to a bygone era of care and attention to detail this is the place to be – truly magnificent and a worthy recipient of this award.”

Jackie Brennand, chairman of Shrewsbury in Bloom said: “We are delighted to have won the Small City category and even more thrilled to have the chance to compete for the ultimate Bloom title, Champions of Champions in 2014.

“We always said that we were happy just to be able to participate in Britain in Bloom, but these results are just the icing on the cake.

“The Bloom campaign has brought out the very best in our local community; educating and creating awareness of the local environment and getting groups to participate in projects to enhance their local areas and overall making Shrewsbury a better place to live, work and visit. Our blooming great town truly lives up to its mantle of being an ‘original one-off.'”
