Shrewsbury’s Unsung Heroes Honoured

Unsung heroes who have gone above and beyond for the town of Shrewsbury have been honoured at this year’s Mayor’s Awards ceremony.

The Mayor’s Award scheme is Shrewsbury’s equivalent of ‘The Oscars’ with local individuals, organisations, groups and businesses being recognised for achievements which have benefited the town.

The great and the good of Shrewsbury were recognised in a variety of categories at the town’s Guildhall last night [WEDS] including; Business, Built Heritage, Community, Environment, Youth and Tourism.

There were also two new categories introduced this year; the Courtesy Award and Market Trader of the Year for Shrewsbury Market Hall.

The overall winners in each category were; Business – Salop Design & Engineering Ltd; Built Heritage – Hatchers Solicitors; Community – Digital Den; Environment – Severn Hospice Volunteer Gardeners; Youth – Young Enterprise; Tourism – Shrewsbury Folk Festival. Aubrey Kirkham Funeral Directors and The Market Buffet were the inaugural overall winners of the two newest categories, Courtesy and Market Trader of the Year for Shrewsbury Market Hall respectively.

Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Jon Tandy, also presented 13 special awards to individuals and organisations he has met throughout his mayoral year that he felt have made a significant contribution to the town. These included; Brigadier G H Wheeler CBE; Chris Bradley; Stan Sedman & Robin Jukes-Hughes; Mad Cow Productions; Daniel McGowan; Craig Petty; Peter Bettis; Raymond Liu; Maggie Love; Mary-Anne Richley; Shrewsbury Town Council Horticultural Workforce; Maurice McGrath and Cromwells.
