Shrewsbury’s High Profile Angling Championship

Shrewsbury is currently playing host to a prestigious angling competition along the banks of the River Severn.

The high profile angling championship will take place along the river at the County Ground in Frankwell and the Quarry.

Taking place over the course of three days from today [TUES] until Thursday, the Shrewsbury River Classic Festival 2018 will play host to seventy-eight competitors, some of whom are the best anglers in the UK.  In addition, the competition will also see local anglers taking part as well as others from across the country.

The anglers started to set up their equipment at the County Ground from around 9.15 this morning, with the competition commencing at 11.00am.  With a five-hour window for fishing each day, the anglers will have to stop at 4.00pm.

Mike Cox, outdoor recreation and asset manager for Shrewsbury Town Council, said: “The Town Council is delighted that the Shrewsbury River Classic Festival is taking place at the town. This angling tournament will provide a real boost to the local economy and help to ensure that Shrewsbury features on the UK’s angling map as a fantastic and iconic place to fish.

“With a large cash prize fund and trophies for the winners, competition amongst the anglers will be intense at this annual event, which has grown in popularity over the years and become a firm fixture on the angling calendar.”

Chris Bainger, Environment Agency Fisheries Technical Specialist for Shropshire, added: “It is testament to the partnership working of the Environment Agency, Shrewsbury Town Council and the local angling groups that we are able to provide such good facilities and excellent fish stocks here in Shrewsbury to attract the “Premier League” of anglers.  We look forward to some great fishing over the course of the next few days.”

Spectators are welcome to come along and watch the anglers compete in the competition, although anyone wishing to see the anglers in action will need to ensure that there is enough space to safeguard their equipment.
