The great and the good of Shrewsbury have been officially recognised by the town’s Mayor.
Around 50 of the town’s most dedicated citizens and organisations received honours from Mayor Councillor Beverley Baker at this year’s Mayor’s Awards ceremony, which took place at the Guildhall last night. [WEDS]
Councillor Baker said everyone who had received an award had played a key part in helping make Shrewsbury a special place to live, work and visit.
The overall winners in each category were; Business – Shrewsbury Business Improvement District; Built Heritage – Shrewsbury School; Community – Shrewsbury Parkrun; Environment – Bowbrook Allotments; Youth – Beacon Cricket Club; Tourism – Martin Wood; Courtesy – Kurt Durnell.
The results for this year’s Market Trader of the Year for Shrewsbury Market Hall, which is part run by the Council, were also revealed at the event with just two votes separating first and second place.
Overall winner was Amess Brothers fruit & veg stall, closely followed by The Market Buffet in second place and The Bird’s Nest Café in third place.
The Mayor also presented nine personal awards to individuals and organisations met throughout her mayoral year whom she felt had made significant contribution to the town. Certificates were presented to; CR Birch & Son; Karen Higgins; The Big Busk; Beryl Galliers; Tim Compton & the team at Shrewsbury Ark; Sarah Raven; Shrewsbury Club; The Hive; St Chads WW1 Project.
Councillor Baker said: “The Mayor’s Awards are a great way to thank many of those who do so much for our town. This year is no different and I am delighted to have been able to recognise some of Shrewsbury’s lovely and hardworking residents who do what they do because they believe in Shrewsbury, and its people.”
