Shrewsbury’s annual Carols in the Square concert, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio, returns next week.
The event, which is a hugely popular attraction in Shrewsbury’s festive calendar, will take place on Wednesday [DEC 13] from 5.30pm with music for all the family.
Shrewsbury Town Council is managing the concert, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Shropshire with Eric Smith from 6.05pm.
There will be music from Shrewsbury Brass Band and Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir who will lead the crowds with renditions of classic Christmas carols including Silent Night, Jingle Bells and Once in Royal David’s City.
The concert will also be available to watch on-line thanks to Shrewsbury-based company, Microvideo, which will be streaming the event live via live.microvideo.uk.com
Due to its popularity, the concert will also be broadcast inside Shrewsbury Market Hall where all the action from the main stage will be relayed via large TV screens.
Helen Ball, town clerk said: “We are delighted to be bringing back the annual Carols in the Square concert. This has always been a special event in Shrewsbury’s calendar, and is a great opportunity for getting together for an informal sing-a-long. There will be song sheets for everyone so there’s no excuse not to join in. Special thanks must go to our sponsors, Veolia and to Microvideo for live streaming the event.”
To allow the Carols in the Square event to be held safely, there will be road closures in place on High Street, Wyle Cop (NW direction) & Princess Street, which will be closed from 5.30pm until 7.30pm.
The Square will be closed all day, from 8am until 7.30pm.
There will be free parking from 4pm at Abbey Foregate, St Julian’s Friars & Frankwell Main Long Stay Car Parks.
Shrewsbury Shopping Centres, as well as many of the town’s independent retailers, will be open until 8pm. The Market Hall will also remain open until 9pm with live music and complimentary mulled wine and mince pies whilst stocks last.
