Primary school children in Shrewsbury are invited to observe the second year marking the centenary of the First World War by designing a poster depicting the plight of animals in conflict.
This year’s official commemorative theme, as selected by the Imperial War Museums, focuses on how animals played their part in the war, both on the home front and on the battlefield.
More than 16 million animals served in the First World War and to mark this, Shrewsbury Town Council is asking youngsters in Year 3-6 to design a poster with the title Shrewsbury Remembers Animals at War.
The posters will be judged by the Mayor of Shrewsbury and a selection will be displayed in the Dingle. The winner will receive £25 in gift vouchers and there will also be a special prize for his/her school.
Entries should only be submitted on A3 paper and should not include any protruding or 3D objects. Templates are available to download below.
The closing date is June 5.
Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Beverley Baker said: “Last year we had an amazing selection of imaginative posters to choose from and it was difficult to pick an overall winner. This year we are commemorating the animals that played an important part in the First World War and I am sure many young people will enjoy understanding the involvement of the animals and incorporating what they have learnt into a successful poster.
