Shrewsbury Town Council’s management of the canopied stalls in the Market Hall is bucking the national trend for occupancy of market stands.
When the Town Council took over the running of the canopied market stalls seven years ago, there was only a 60% occupancy rate, but with a change in fortunes at the 1960’s built Market Hall, the success story is that all the stalls are now fully utilised.
Mike Cox, Outdoor Recreation and Asset Manager at Shrewsbury Town Council said: “It is testament to the hard work undertaken by our staff, in particular our Markets Officers Rob Miles and Tim Ferguson as well as Andy Hill, that we have full occupancy for the first time in our history. With a waiting list for availability, we are so proud of the drive to ensure that our stalls are occupied.
And it is this vibrancy that has led to the Market Hall being nominated in the NABMA poll to find Britain’s Best Market for 2017.

People can vote as many times as they like – it would be wonderful if our Market Hall can make it in to the top 6 in this year’s poll.
The Market Hall is located under the town’s iconic clock tower and boasts a vibrant mix of eclectic stalls selling a range of goods from traditional fruit, vegetables, fish and meat to authentic Thai food, champagne and oysters, vintage wares, clothes, books, trinkets, handmade jewellery and much more.
It is jointly run by Shropshire Council, which is responsible for the permanent stalls located around the perimeter of the market floor and gallery, and Shrewsbury Town Council which manages the canopied stalls in the centre.
The main trading days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with a select few stalls open on Thursday mornings.
