Residents Encouraged to Attend Meeting

Members of the public are being encouraged to turn out to a special meeting to hear plans for a multi-million pound overhaul of Shrewsbury’s Riverside shopping centre.

Representatives from Shearer Property Group will make a presentation to Shrewsbury Town Council planning committee on March 20.

The proposed plans, if approved, would see the existing Riverside Shopping Centre bulldozed and rebuilt with links created to the Darwin and Pride Hill centres.

A giant two-level shopping complex would be created on the site of the current centre, housing a department store, 50 shops, office space, 10 restaurants and cafes.

The proposals would also see a 300-space underground car park built, the existing Raven Meadows multi-storey car park refurbished and the bus station entrance improved and linked to the New Riverside centre.

The scheme is expected to cost around £150 million and create more than 700 jobs. Shearer Property Group and Ignis Asset Management, the developers behind the plans, hope to begin development in summer 2013, subject to planning permission, with an opening date scheduled for autumn 2015.

Helen Ball, Town Clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council said: “We would encourage residents to attend the meeting with Shearer Property Group so they can hear about the plans first-hand. This is their chance to meet with the developers who can answer any questions they might have about the proposals.”

The meeting is being held at the town’s Guildhall and starts at 6pm.
