Remembrance Service in Shrewsbury to Mark Centenary of End of WWI

The Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Peter Nutting, would like to encourage members of the public to join him in attending Remembrance Sunday in the town.

The Mayor will lead a civic procession with units of HM Forces and the Service organisations, leaving the castle at 9am following the route of Castle Gates, Castle Street, Pride Hill, Mardol Head and St John’s Hill to St. Chad’s Church.  The procession will be led by music from Shrewsbury Brass Band.

A Remembrance Sunday service will be held at St Chad’s Church at 9.45am on 11 November.

Following the Service, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the Quarry at 11am.  Buglers will sound Last Post, which will be followed by two minutes’ silence before wreaths are laid.

A march-past and salute will follow immediately after the wreath laying ceremony on St. Chad’s Terrace.

Councillor Nutting would like to urge members of the public to join him in marking Remembrance Sunday and to express their gratitude to all those who gave their lives in two World Wars and the conflicts which have since followed.

He said: “With the centenary of the end of the First World War, it is especially poignant that we should remember the sacrifices of yesterday which allow us to enjoy our freedom of today. I hope members of the public will join me on November 11 for this special Remembrance service at St Chad’s”.
