Record Breaking Number of Hanging Baskets in Town

A record breaking 299 hanging baskets, produced by Shrewsbury Town Council, have been purchased by businesses and shops in a bid to uphold the Shrewsbury’s heritage as ‘a town of flowers.’

The dedicated workforce at the Town Council’s nursery at Weeping Cross have spent months preparing thousands of flowers to make the town’s streets and open spaces a floral masterpiece.

This year, more baskets than ever before have been sold to a variety of establishments.

The Town Council charges local businesses and shops £45.00 per basket, which includes delivery, maintenance and disposal at the end of the season.

Chairman of the Shrewsbury In Bloom Committee, Councillor Keith Roberts said: “the hanging baskets are a great way of enhancing the town for visitors and residents.

“This year we have received orders for, and hung outside a variety of establishments, an amazing 299 hanging baskets, which Shrewsbury Town Council water, feed and maintain during the summer months.

“During the current economic climate I am thrilled at the response of traders and shop owners within Shrewsbury for the hanging baskets which enhance our beautiful town’s appearance.

“These baskets and planters, together with the privately purchased hanging baskets, really make a difference to the visual appeal of the town.  They engender a sense of pride, and encourage visitors to return to Shrewsbury time and time again.”
