Raising Funds for Charity is a Piece of Cake

Shoppers who visit Shrewsbury’s indoor Market Hall will be able to help decorate a giant Christmas cake in aid of Help for Heroes this week.

The six foot traditional fruit cake, which is being made by local baker Theresa Tauchie, will arrive at the venue on December 15.

The cake will be sectioned off into 64 portions and members of the public are invited to decorate a square using a range of tools on site, free of charge, which will include sugar stars, mini fudge chunks and jelly drops.

The cake will remain at the Market Hall until December 22 when Edd Kimber – winner of the BBC series The Great British Bake Off – stops by to judge the best decorated sections.

Shoppers will then be invited to tuck into the cake, with proceeds from the sale of slices going to Help for Heroes.

The giant cake is a joint initiative between Shrewsbury Town Council, which runs the canopied section of the market, and property company Jones Lang La Salle which manages the periphery stalls and units.

Helen Ball, Town Clerk said: “Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a good cake and our giant version will ensure there is plenty for everyone to enjoy at the Market Hall, while also raising money for an excellent cause.”

Kate Gittins, Site Facilities Manager at the Market Hall added: “We always try to do something a little bit different to entertain our customers during the festive season and we hope shoppers have fun decorating our six foot cake. Everyone can take part, no matter what age, so come along and test out your decorating skills!”
