Quarry Play Area Update

Work to revamp the Quarry play area in Shrewsbury is progressing well, with some of the facilities expected to be open in time for the Easter holidays.

Contractors, Ray Parry Playgrounds LTD, have been working on site since December to complete the £375,000 overhaul which will see the site transformed into Darwin’s Islands of Adventure.

The design, which was chosen by Shrewsbury residents, incorporates traditional play equipment such as slides and swings, as well as fountains and water features which are being built in place of the old paddling pool.

Much of the existing equipment will be retained, refurbished and recycled for use in other Town Council playgrounds.

Despite the recent inclement weather conditions, and fluctuating river levels, work is progressing well. The original infant play area has been completely removed and the entire layout of the play area overhauled.

A dish roundabout has been installed, as well as an inclusive group swing, bridge crossing with rubber spheres, a rock spinner, both flat and cradle swings, a mission climber and the central tree house tower climber with a large curved slide.

The footings for the next phase of the project, which includes an inclusive roundabout and swing are also underway, with tarmacing commencing and rubber safer surfacing being laid.

The former paddling pool has been completely removed, along with a section of hedging to open up the area. A brand new pump house and new pipe work has been installed in preparation for the installation of the exciting new splash park.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Alan Mosley said: “It is great to see the transformation taking place in the Quarry.  We wanted something new, exciting, different and inclusive which is what we are getting.  It will be a great asset for residents throughout the town and make the Quarry an even more attractive place to visit.  My grandchildren can’t wait!”

Councillor Andrew Bannerman, ward member for Quarry & Coton Hill added: “Many people have been eagerly awaiting the new playground in the Quarry.  Quite rightly the Town Council has prioritized our young people and the attraction of the Quarry, our historic park, right in the middle of town.  The contractor is making good progress and we look forward to the completion of this ambitious and exciting project.”

Contractor Ray Parry said the company was pleased with the progress of the project so far.

He said: “We have been really excited about the overall transformation of the playground. Despite the high rainfall recently we are very pleased that good progress has been made so that, subject to future weather conditions, we can hand back some of the site for public use in time for the Easter holidays.”
