Work to revamp the existing play area in Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park got underway last week.
Contractors have fenced off the infant section of the playground and have begun to remove equipment ready for the £375,000 overhaul. Much of the equipment will be retained, refurbished and recycled for use in other Town Council playgrounds.
Work is currently restricted to the infant play area, with the main part of the playground remaining open until after Christmas.
Last month the Town Council appointed Shrewsbury-based company, Ray Parry Playgrounds, to transform the site after public votes were cast in favour of its Darwin’s Islands of Adventure theme.
The design incorporates traditional play equipment such as slides and swings, as well as fountains and water features which it is hoped will be built in place of the existing paddling pool, subject to acquiring a lease for the land from Shropshire Council.
The play area will fully close after Christmas to allow the bulk of the work to take place with a view to the completed park being re-opened in the Spring.
Councillor Alan Mosley, Leader of the Council said: “I am delighted that work to transform the Quarry play area is moving ahead swiftly.
This is a really exciting scheme and the Town Council is proud to be able to take this project forward. It will rejuvenate the area and provide tremendous new facilities for Shrewsbury residents and visitors alike.”
Councillor Andrew Bannerman, ward member for Quarry & Coton Hill added: “This is a major investment by the Town Council, which demonstrates its determination to provide the best play facilities for the ever increasing numbers using our wonderful Quarry.”
