Play Areas to be Revamped

Play areas in Shrewsbury could be re-designed with more modern equipment and facilities after Town Councillors gave the green light to review the existing provision.

Members of Shrewsbury Town Council’s Recreation & Leisure Committee enthusiastically endorsed a proposal that it reviews its provision for play equipment in the Quarry, and elsewhere in the town, at a meeting held last night. [WEDS]

The proposal was made by Council Leader, Alan Mosley, who highlighted that the major facility at the Quarry was very well used and, although subject to regular health & safety inspection, was now looking tired and in need of a re-design with new equipment and facilities.

The potential of incorporating the paddling pool into future plans was also discussed. In addition, the Council’s other play areas across the town will also be assessed in line with future developments, with which the Town Council is closely involved, ensuring that that all new sites have good open space and play provision.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Alan Mosley said: “Our cross-town play facilities are well used with the Quarry attracting residents from throughout the town and many visitors. However, the facilities are outdated and un-inspiring. We want to provide equipment which is fun to use and encourages physical activity for all. We will consult with residents and key groups and develop proposals for modern, popular facilities which the town can be proud of.”

Local ward member for Quarry & Coton Hill, Andrew Bannerman added: “Play is essential to human well-being. We are fortunate in having such a beautiful recreational space in the Quarry and we should be looking for ways in which we can encourage people of all ages to exercise their minds and bodies. We should never spoil the historic and aesthetic qualities of the Quarry, but the current play facilities are too limited and there are neglected corners and opportunities for more imaginative activities.”
