Green-fingered Pupils Scoop Prize

Green-fingered pupils have been battling it out to be crowned the winner of Shrewsbury Town Council’s annual unusual floral container competition.

The competition, which is now in its 15th year, requires school children to plant flowers, vegetables or fruits in weird and wacky containers such as old bath tubs, tin cans and clothing.

The school with the most unusual display wins.

This year the judges awarded first prize, £75 in garden gift vouchers, to Greenfields Primary School for its Royal Wedding themed display. Second prize, £50 in vouchers, went to Wilfred Owen Primary School and Mount Pleasant Primary School scooped £25 by coming in third place.

Sundorne Infant School and Crowmoor Primary School were also Highly Commended for their efforts and will each receive £10 in vouchers.

Judge Debbie Entwistle, technical officer at Shrewsbury Town Council, said: “We would like to thank all the schools who took part in this year’s competition. The standard of entries was high, as always, and we really enjoyed seeing all the different containers the children had planted. Special congratulations go to Greenfields Primary School which came first for its fantastic Royal Wedding themed display.”

Prizes will be presented, together with trophies and certificates, by the Mayor of Shrewsbury at the Town of Flowers Awards Presentation to be held at the Guildhall on October 11.
