New Mayor of Shrewsbury Takes Office

The new Mayor of Shrewsbury has been elected for the coming year.

Councillor Peter Nutting was officially sworn in as Mayor at the annual meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council last night. [TUES]

The mayor-making ceremony, which was held in The Walker Theatre, saw Councillor Nutting take over the role as civic leader from outgoing Mayor, Councillor Jane Mackenzie.  His wife, Julie, will support him as Mayoress.

Councillor Phil Gillam was also appointed as Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Nutting said his main aim as Mayor is to raise the profile of the area for both residents and visitors alike as well as strengthen the already strong links between Shrewsbury Town Council and Shropshire Council, of which he is Leader.  He added that he wants to work towards ensuring that the Town Council has a permanent headquarters in the town centre, which can also be shared with the community.

He said: “As a Shrewsbury man born and bred, I am honoured to be elected as Mayor of Shrewsbury, following a proud tradition since 1638.  I am looking forward to the challenges that the role will provide as well as upholding the position of Mayor representing a town that means so much to me and my family.”

He also took the opportunity to thank former Mayor, Jane Mackenzie and her Consort, Tony Parsons, for the work they had done for the town over the last twelve months.

“Jane and Tony have done a tremendous job of representing Shrewsbury during her term of office.  It is now my responsibility, together with my wife Julie, to carry on the tradition of highlighting the fabulous town we have here both within our community and beyond.”

The incoming Mayor also outlined his fundraising plans for the year.

“During my Mayoral year, I will be supporting Little Rascals, a local charity helping to make life easier for children with disabilities as well as supporting them and their families to get them the help they need to enhance their lives and increase their independence.

I will be holding a number of fundraising events throughout the year to raise funds for this extremely worthy charity.”

Councillor Nutting added that he would also use his mayoral year to continue to promote the town and its businesses.

Councillor Nutting will now be officially sworn in at a civic service held at St Chad’s Church on Sunday 10 June.

The service will start at 10am and will be preceded by a parade from the castle to St Chad’s, departing at approximately 9.35am, by way of Castle Street, Pride Hill, Shoplatch, Bellstone, St. John’s Hill and St. Chad’s Terrace, led by the Shrewsbury Brass Band.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Following the church service the traditional Loving Cup ceremony will take place at which the Mayor will be invited to drink from the Loving Cup and toast the Queen and town. The congregation will then be invited to share the toast.
