Net Your Chance to See Iconic Davis Cup

Shrewsbury sports fans will have the opportunity to net a glimpse of the iconic tennis trophy, the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, when it returns to Shrewsbury as part of an official tour this weekend.

The towering award, one of the most famous in the sporting world, will be on display during an open day at Monkmoor Recreation Ground on May 7.

The event is being organised by Tennis Shropshire and will run from 10am until 1pm.

This is the second time the Cup has visited Shrewsbury this year as it continues to tour the UK following Team GB’s momentous Davis Cup victory in November.

Other activities taking place during the open day include Mini Tennis and Tennis Factory from 10am until 11am and the launch of a 10-week family beginner’s course from 11am until 12pm. There will then be some exhibition games and general activities from 12pm until 1pm.

Councillor Jon Tandy, Chairman of the Recreation & Leisure Committee said: “I’m delighted that Shrewsbury Town Council is to host the iconic Davis Cup when it returns to Shrewsbury next month, it’s a great coup for the town. There are some fantastic facilities at Monkmoor, and indeed across all the Town Council sports sites, and events like this will only serve to raise their profile further.”

Bob Kerr, Chairman of Tennis Shropshire said: “We are delighted that the Davis Cup Trophy Tour, on its journey around the UK, has chosen to visit the recently refurbished tennis courts at Monkmoor. It will enable us to showcase the excellent playing facilities and help launch a programme of affordable organised tennis activities – the first of which is a 10-week coaching course starting on the day of the Trophy Tour visit. This course is tailored particularly for those new to the game and especially suited to families as they can receive coaching at the same time, one group for children and one for adults.”

Details of available courses can be obtained from Tennis Shropshire 01743 452470 or visit www.tennisshropshire.co.uk

Tennis Shropshire is the local branch of the Lawn Tennis Association, the official governing body for tennis in the UK.
