Members of the public are invited to help to mark the 100th anniversary since the outbreak of the First World War at a commemorative event in the Quarry this weekend.
Civic dignitaries will gather at the Bandstand on Saturday [AUG 2] for a short commemoration of readings and music in recognition and remembrance of the outbreak of war in 1914.
Proceedings will begin at 11.30am and will be led by the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Beverley Baker.
School children across Shrewsbury have already done their bit to help mark the occasion by decorating wooden poppies which will form part of a Flanders bed display in the Dingle gardens.
The memorial bed has been designed by Shrewsbury Town Council’s horticultural team, with help from the British Ironworks Centre in Oswestry, to reflect the outbreak of war.
The display will be officially dedicated by the Mayor as part of the overall centenary commemorations.
Councillor Ioan Jones, who is leading the commemoration committee said: “The poppy is a powerful symbol of remembrance and this is a wonderful example of how a local community initiative can help shape our national commemorations.”
