Memorial Service for Former Mayor

A memorial service to celebrate the life of former mayor of Shrewsbury Eileen Sandford, who died at the age of 88, will take place on Wednesday. [15th June]

Mrs Sandford, who was made an MBE by the Queen in 2004, died on May 5 after being diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer.

The memorial service will be held at St Chad’s Church from 12 noon.

Everyone is welcome to attend and uniformed members are invited to wear their medals.

There will be a retiring collection to be distributed between selected charities with whom Mrs Sandford was associated.

Mrs Sandford represented the Harlescott ward as a Shrewsbury and Atcham borough councillor and a Shropshire County Council member.

She became the mayor of Shrewsbury in 2003 and carried out a number of stunts for charity, including abseiling down Lord Hill’s Column.

Helen Ball, Town Clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council said: “We were all very sad to hear of the passing of Eileen Sandford, she was a well loved and respected pillar of the community. We have had our chance to say goodbye to an old friend at her funeral and now we come to celebrate her life, and all that she achieved within it, through this memorial service. Everyone is welcome to attend.”
