Lime Tree Works Completed in Shrewsbury’s Quarry

Lime Tree Works Completed in Shrewsbury's Quarry

The essential maintenance work on the lime trees in Shrewsbury Town Council’s Grade I Listed park has now been completed.

Shropshire-based Benbow Brothers Limited were contracted by the Town Council to undertake the full works programme, which commenced in January.

The work involved crown raising all the avenue planted trees to provide adequate clearance to around six metres and crown reduce branches of selected trees over high footfall areas of the park.

Helen Ball, town clerk, said: “The flooding of the River Severn last month has delayed the work, but we’re pleased that the work has now been completed.

“Many of the trees in the Quarry are over 70 years old and we have a duty to ensure the longevity of our heritage assets in the park. It is also essential that we maintain these mature trees to help reduce our carbon footprint as part of our commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030. ”

Using the international I-Trees software program which places a financial value of trees taking into account the social and environmental benefits they provide, Tree Officers recently valued the Quarry trees at around £10 million.

Councillor Kevin Pardy, chairman of the Town Council’s recreation and leisure committee, added: “We’re delighted that the works on the Quarry lime trees are now completed. Whilst this is the first major commissioned works on the trees for nearly twenty years, we will still undertake our annual inspections and remedial work where necessary to ensure the safety of the public who use our park.”
