Installation of Freemen

The second installation of Freemen ceremony to be carried out by Shrewsbury Town Council, and to welcome women into the Gild, is being held next week.

The Mayor of Shrewsbury will hear the claim of those to be sworn a Burgess of the Town at the Guildhall on April 15 at 12.30pm.

They are: Angela Margaret Robinson, daughter of Gordon Burley Done, sworn 26th March 1960; Jenifer Picken, daughter of Gordon Burley Done; Emily Jane Goff, granddaughter of Gordon Burley Done; James Samuel Charles Robinson, grandson of Gordon Burley Done; Jonathan Luke Picken, grandson of Gordon Burley Done.

Martin George Otter, great, great grandson of William Done, sworn 29th July 1835; David Alan Otter, great, great, great grandson of William Done; Michael John Otter, great, great, great grandson of William Done.

Susan Hughes, daughter of Cyril Herbert Dennis Done, sworn 26th March 1960; Katie Lenc, granddaughter of Cyril Herbert Dennis Done; James Clarke Hughes, grandson of Cyril Herbert Dennis Done.

 Elizabeth Oldfield, daughter of George Henry Cole, sworn 30th September 1988. Hannah Marie Clayton, daughter of Vivienne Jane Vernon, sworn 24th September 2010; Michael Robert Vernon, son of Vivienne Jane Vernon.

Andrew James Birch, son of James Thomas Birch, sworn 20th January 1966; Rachel Jennifer Downes, daughter of James Thomas Birch.

The title of freemen has been granted to the male descendants of Shrewsbury’s Burgesses dating back to before the arrival of William the Conqueror in 1066.

Women, however, were not permitted into the Gild until a change in law in 2009.

The first women were admitted to the Shrewsbury Gild in September last year.

Helen Ball, Clerk to the Town Council said: “It is a great honour to be involved in such a prestigious ceremony and we look forward to welcoming all of our new freemen and women, and their families, to the Guildhall to receive their accolades.”
