Countdown to Reveal Winning Poster Design

The countdown is on to reveal the winning design in Shrewsbury Town Council’s Olympic poster competition.

More than 500 entries were received from young people across the central area of Shropshire who were given the task of designing a poster to celebrate the passing of the Olympic Torch through Shrewsbury on May 30.

The top 30 designs were chosen by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor Elect, Councillors Keith Roberts and Jon Tandy, and now form part of Shrewsbury’s official Olympic Countdown within the Pride Hill Shopping Centre, by the Roushill entrance.

Each day a new poster will be revealed up until the day of the Torch visit.

Among them is the overall winning entry from Alex Tompkinson, 11, from Pontesbury CE Primary School.

As part of the competition prize, Alex  and two guests have been invited as VIPs to accompany the Mayor on the Dias as the Torch passes through the town.

The school has also won £250 to be spent on sports equipment.

Councillor Roberts congratulated entrants on the high standard of entries. “Both myself and the Deputy Mayor elect enjoyed looking through all the posters, the standard was incredibly high and it was extremely difficult to choose the top 30, and a single winner. However, both Councillor Tandy and I felt Alex’s entry was particularly strong and deserved top place. Congratulations to everyone who took part.”
