Council’s Facebook Page Surpasses Expectations

The number of people logging on to Shrewsbury Town Council’s Facebook page – its first foray into the social networking world – has ‘surpassed expectations,’ say organisation bosses.

The Council launched its Facebook page in November last year and it already has almost 70 loyal followers, with even more people sharing news stories and links on a regular basis.

Members agreed to set up a council page on the site, which has more than 500 million users, in a bid to reach out to a wider audience.

The page offers an interactive opportunity for Shrewsbury Town Council to communicate with the public and encourages people to engage and interact with the organisation in a brand new way.

The page can be found at www.facebook.com/shrewsburytowncouncil

Helen Ball, Town Clerk said: “Facebook is helping us to reach groups we have previously found difficult to engage and takes us to where the people already are. It has quickly become an invaluable tool for getting information out to the people of Shrewsbury and has surpassed our initial expectations.

‘What we want to see now is more interaction from our Facebook community – let us know what really matters to you and get involved with local debates and discussions – your comments could help shape the future of our town!”

Facebook was launched in 2004 and is the biggest social networking site to date.

Today, more than 50 per cent of users log onto Facebook in any given day. The average user has 130 friends and people spend more than 700 billion combined minutes per month on the site.

Its closest competitor is Twitter with around 175 million registered users.
