The Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Miles Kenny, will be raising the Commonwealth Flag at the Guildhall at on Monday [14 MARCH] in celebration of Commonwealth Day 2016.
Members of the public are welcome to attend and are asked to gather at the flagpole to the front of the building where the flag will be raised at 8am.
Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Miles Kenny said: “The Commonwealth is a huge global organisation of international co-operation, rich in diversity, aiming to improve the quality of life of its citizens. I am very pleased we are flying the Commonwealth Flag to celebrate this year’s theme of “Inclusivity,” something in our town we care deeply about with our multicultural festivals and no bars approach to beliefs, ability, gender, sexual preference and age. Join me if you can as we raise the flag at the Guildhall on Monday morning.”
Commonwealth Day is an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and Commonwealth values, as well as the work of Commonwealth organisations. It is celebrated on the second Monday in March every year.
More than 850 Commonwealth flags will be raised on Monday in locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and Commonwealth countries.
