Butcher Row Toilets Open in Time for Easter

Shropshire’s first publicly funded disabled Changing Places facility, which has been built as part of a dramatic overhaul of a public toilet block in the heart of Shrewsbury, is set to open to the public tomorrow. [GOOD FRI]

The male toilets at Butcher Row were forced to close in 2010 following months of anti-social behaviour.

The female toilets were then closed last Spring, while a complete renovation of the site was carried out.

The new facility, which will open in time for the Easter break, was designed by Shrewsbury firm Base Architecture & Design and contains male, female and disabled facilities, along with a baby changing area, all at ground level.

Around £50,000 has been spent on providing Shropshire’s first and only publicly funded Changing Places facility which will cater for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Alan Mosley said: “Shrewsbury can be proud of this facility and the fact that it has been delivered virtually on budget despite some entirely unforeseeable setbacks and the inclusion of the excellent Changing Places services. Residents and visitors alike will be appreciative and it is indicative of our desire to improve the attraction of Shrewsbury for the benefit of all.”

Helen Ball, Town Clerk added: “I am really pleased we have been able to re-open Butcher Row in time for the Easter break. The site looks fantastic and the Changing Places facility will ensure that the toilets are fully accessible for all.”
