Butcher Row Toilets Closed as Redevelopment Commences

Work to transform a public toilet block in the centre of Shrewsbury is set to start this week following the appointment of contractors by Shrewsbury Town Council.

The public convenience facility, on Butcher Row, has been partially closed for three years due to anti-social behaviour.

The male toilets were closed in February 2010 but the female amenities remained open.

The entire facility will now be closed from Monday [MARCH 4] to allow the refurbishment to commence.

Shrewsbury Town Council has appointed contractors Coalbrookdale Builders Ltd to carry out the works, which will take approximately four months to complete.

The new building, designed by Base Architecture & Design, will have male, female and disabled facilities, along with a baby changing area, all at ground level.

There will also be a specialised Changing Places room, which is in addition to the standard disabled toilet.

The facility is designed for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets such as those with profound and multiple learning disabilities, and their carers.

The Changing Places toilets provide more space and dedicated equipment including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist and will be the first of its kind to be publically funded in Shropshire.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Peter Nutting said: “The replacement of the Butcher Row toilets will be a really exciting, modern building that will enhance this area of town. The building will be to the very highest standards with excellent facilities for residents and visitors to Shrewsbury.”

Paul Spendlove, managing director of Coalbrookdale Builders, added: ‘We are delighted to have been awarded this contract with Shrewsbury Town Council. The toilets are a Shrewsbury landmark which we will bring into the 21st century after years of vandalism and anti-social behaviour.’
