The Mayor of Shrewsbury was proud to honour the town’s top gardeners in the Town Council’s annual Town of Flowers Awards.
Residents and businesses were invited to the Mayor’s Parlour in Shrewsbury Castle on Wednesday [Nov 21] for an awards presentation to honour the winners of this year’s contest.
Competitors entered the competition in a range of categories including best residential front garden, best commercial premises, best allotment and best schools ground award.
Entries were judged throughout the summer by members of the Shrewsbury in Bloom committee.
In the Residential Front Gardens category, the judges were impressed with the high standard of the entries once again this year. With the difficult conditions encountered by all gardeners across the country during the hot summer, the judges were aware that this would have an impact on the floral features on display. With a difficult decision to make, and after much deliberation, the judges declared Ms D Chandler the winner of the category, with Mr M Dorricott and Mr J Evans very worthy runners-up.
Judging is always difficult in the Allotments Competition, where competition is fierce. Mr B and Mrs J Owen once again walked away with the Championship Cup for the third year running, with Mr C Davies a very close runner-up.
With a record-number of entries in the Commercial Properties category, the Shrewsbury in Bloom judges toured the town and awarded Terry Jones Solicitors on Abbey Foregate the winners of this competition with The Royal Oak on Coton Hill in second place and both The Abbey and Ye Olde Bucks Head in Frankwell in joint third place.
Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Peter Nutting, extended his thanks to everyone who had entered the competition for their hard work in difficult conditions this year. He said: “It is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate our enthusiastic green-fingered residents throughout the town. We have such dedicated people here in Shrewsbury, who all help to play their part in the town’s entry in the Bloom competitions and who also enjoy showcasing their skills with both floral and edible displays in so many different locations. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who entered and for playing their part in helping to make Shrewsbury the town of flowers.”
