Blooming Great Gardens Celebrated at Annual Town of Flowers Awards

The Mayor of Shrewsbury honoured the town’s top gardeners in the annual Town of Flowers Awards.

Residents and businesses were invited to the Mayor’s Parlour in Shrewsbury Castle on Tuesday [31 Oct] for an awards presentation to honour the winners of this year’s contest.

Competitors battled it out in a range of categories including best residential front garden, best commercial premises and best schools ground award.

Entries were judged throughout the summer by members of the Shrewsbury in Bloom committee.

In the Residential Front Gardens category, the judges were impressed with the high standard of the entries and had a difficult decision in choosing a winner.  Mr T and Mrs A Bywater were declared the winners of the category, with Mr J Philips and Mr D Puddle very worthy runners-up.

Judging is always difficult in the Allotments Competition and Mr B and Mrs J Owen once again walked away with the Championship Cup for the second year running, with Mr C Pardoe a very close runner-up.

With a record-number of entries in the Commercial Properties category, the Shrewsbury in Bloom judges toured the town and awarded The Old Bell on Abbey Foregate the winners of this competition with The Abbey on Monkmoor Road as the runner-up.

Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Jane Mackenzie, who presented the awards said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our enthusiastic green-fingered people of Shrewsbury. We are so very lucky to have such dedicated people, who play their part in the town’s entry in the Heart of England in Bloom competition and who also enjoy showcasing their skills with both floral and edible displays in so many different locations. Thank you to everyone who entered and for playing their part in helping to make Shrewsbury the town of flowers.”
