The Mayor of Shrewsbury visited pupils at the Priory School yesterday [THURS] to mark their blooming great efforts in designing two floral features within the town.
Councillor Ioan Jones presented prizes and certificates to youngsters at the school who had worked on a five week community participation project, in conjunction with Young Shrewsbury (Shrewsbury Town Council’s Youth Services team) and the Shrewsbury in Bloom committee.
Students from Year 8 designed the floral pattern of the Cemetery roundabout outside the school, and the D splitter roundabout on the Grange road, Roman road junction.
Pupils were given a design brief and were asked to come up with a suitable theme for the two islands.
Out of the dozens of entries submitted, six were shortlisted for each location. Finalists were then asked to present their ideas and designs in Dragon’s Den style to a panel of judges, including the former Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Miles Kenny and Mrs Aurona Kenny, Principal Michael Barratt and Adam Purnell from Shrewsbury Town Council’s youth service team.
The winning themes, which have been designed to mark the Battle of the Somme and HM The Queen’s 90th birthday, have now been turned into reality and have been planted up by the Town Council’s horticultural team as part of the wider summer planting programme.

Pupils were presented with certificates and a £20 voucher each, courtesy of the Shrewsbury in Bloom committee.
Councillor Jones said: “It’s fantastic to see the results of all the hard work put in by the students at the Priory School, they have done a fantastic job designing the two floral features and I know the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Miles Kenny, had a tough job selecting winners from such a strong set of finalists. I really enjoyed meeting the pupils involved with the project, and presenting them with their well-deserved prizes.”
School Principal Michael Barret said: “We always encourage our students to contribute to the local community and working with Shrewsbury Town Council has been a wonderful opportunity for them. We hope all the local community enjoy the beautiful floral displays and appreciate the sentiment behind their creation.”
Adam Purnell, Youth & Community Development Officer added: “I was really impressed with the quality of all of the student’s ideas, presentations and designs. They have really worked hard throughout this project and now the rest of the town will benefit from their work which is fantastic.
“I look forward to developing more community projects in partnership with local schools or youth groups, and would love to hear from anyone who would like to work with Young Shrewsbury on similar projects in future.”
