Blooming Great Design Wins Prize

A Shrewsbury school is set to receive £250 worth of gardening equipment after one of its pupils scooped the top prize in a Shrewsbury in Bloom competition.

Local primary schools were invited to enter a poster competition to promote Shrewsbury’s theme for Britain in Bloom this year – Incredible Edibles.

As well as the many floral displays around the town, Shrewsbury will also be growing vegetables, herbs and edible plants ready for the judge’s visit in August.

To help launch the campaign, children were asked to design a poster featuring their own Incredible Edible characters.

Almost 300 entries were received and judged by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillors Jon Tandy and Beverly Baker.

The winning entry was by Bethany Childs, age 11, whose colourful Incredible Edible gang included Mrs Melon Head, Geek App and Broc the Rock.

The prize was £25 worth of vouchers for the winning entrant, along with £250 worth of gardening equipment which will go to Harlescott Junior School.

Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Jon Tandy said: “We were overwhelmed by the number of entries received and very impressed by the high standard. The Deputy Mayor and I would like to congratulate Bethany for her winning design which really stood out from the crowd. Well done!”

Shrewsbury achieved a Gold Award and Category Winner title in the Heart of England in Bloom Awards in 2012 and was nominated to represent the West Midlands in the national Britain in Bloom Finals for 2013.

The judges are due to visit the town on August 5 when the many floral arrangements, and Incredible Edible displays, will be adjudicated against exacting criteria.
