Blooming Good Idea to Raise Funds for Charity

A Shrewsbury Councillor has come up with a blooming good idea to help raise funds for charity.

Former Mayor, Councillor Kath Owen, will be selling non-stop begonia corms, recycled from this year’s summer planting display, in a bid to raise cash for the Severn Hospice.

The corms will be bagged up and sold in return for a donation to the hospice.

Councillor Owen came up with the idea after saving her own begonias every year by drying off the corms and storing them in boxes. Then, in early spring the corms should have shoots which can then be potted ready for the summer.

Councillor Owen said: “Non-stop begonias are my favourite flower and for the last 14 years I have been saving the corms, I have over 100 now in boxes. I thought it would be a good idea to recycle the Shrewsbury in Bloom flowers. I will be selling them at a very reasonable price and hopefully they will last for many years. The money I raise will go to the hospice to help the patients and their families over Christmas. Every penny counts so hopefully people will be kind.”

Gary Farmer, Operations Manager for Shrewsbury Town Council added: “The begonia corms are usually disregarded at the end of the season so we were delighted when Councillor Owen suggested recycling them for charity, it’s a great idea and with a little care the corms should be good for a many years.”
