Members of the public are invited to gather in front of the Old Market Hall on Thursday [21 APRIL], from 7.30pm, where the beacon will be lit as part of a national trail of more than 1,000 flames nationwide.
Beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK overseas Territories and Commonwealth Countries to celebrate this landmark birthday, with Her Majesty lighting the principal beacon at Windsor Castle.
The Shrewsbury Brass Band will perform in the Square from 7.30pm until shortly before 8pm when the National Anthem will be sung. Following this the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Sir Algernon Heber-Percy, will light the beacon.
Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Miles Kenny said: “Shrewsbury Town Council is delighted to have been given the opportunity to organise this event as part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. Everyone is welcome to attend and I look forward to leading a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday in honour of Her Majesty.”
Sir Algernon Heber-Percy added: “Our office has received a message from HRH The Prince of Wales, expressing his delight at the very many people coming together to light beacons in celebration of The Queen’s 90th birthday. I know the people of Shropshire would wish to be associated with his message and send our warmest congratulations to Her Majesty.”
Bruno Peek, Pageantmaster for The Queen’s 90th Birthday Beacons said: “It has been an enormous privilege to be able to organise this amazing community event to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. I am delighted to see so many different organisations playing their part.”
