Battle of Britain Sunday

Shrewsbury’s civic leaders will mark the 77th anniversary of the Battle of Britain this Sunday.

A special service will be held at St Chad’s Church at 10.00am followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the Quarry park, to commemorate the hundreds of lives lost during the battle.

The annual commemorative service marks the victory by Royal Air Force pilots and aircrew, and the loss of more than 500 lives, during the Battle of Britain in 1940, which was the first major campaign to be fought entirely in the skies.

The Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Jane Mackenzie, will lead the civic party and said she hoped as many people as possible turned out to pay tribute to the troops: “We owe so much to our brave pilots and aircrew who fought to defend our country. I am honoured to be taking part in this weekend’s commemorative events.

“I hope members of the public will turn out to pay their tribute to the troops, especially on this 77th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.”

Staff from RAF Shawbury will represent the Royal Air Force whilst a trumpeter from the Central Band of the RAF will sound the last post and reveille. Following the wreath-laying ceremony, Shrewsbury Brass Band will provide the musical finale to the commemoration.
