Awards for Shrewsbury Pupil’s Blooming Great Designs

Pupils from Priory School were presented with awards to mark their winning designs for two floral features within the town.

Chairman of Shrewsbury in Bloom, Councillor Keith Roberts, presented prizes to youngsters from the school who had worked on a five week community participation project, in conjunction with Young Shrewsbury (Shrewsbury Town Council’s Youth Services team) and the Shrewsbury in Bloom committee.

Students from Year 8 designed the floral pattern of the Cemetery roundabout on Longden Road outside the school, and the D splitter roundabout on the Grange Road junction with Roman Road.

Pupils were given a design brief including which plants would be available for their designs and were asked to come up with a suitable theme for the two islands.

Out of the dozens of entries submitted, six were shortlisted for each location. The finalists then had to present their ideas and designs to a panel of judges, including former Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Ioan Jones, Principal Michael Barratt and Adam Purnell from Shrewsbury Town Council’s Youth Service team.

The winning themes, which were designed by the successful pupils, have been transformed from paper and have now been planted up by the Town Council’s horticultural team as part of the wider summer planting programme.

Pupils were presented with certificates and a £20 voucher each, courtesy of the Shrewsbury in Bloom committee.

Councillor Roberts said: “It’s fantastic to see the results of all the hard work put in by the students at the Priory School. It’s wonderful that we have so many pupils who have taken part in this competition and are interested in how the colours and plants work together to create the display we see on one of the main routes around town.”

Adam Purnell, Youth & Community Development Officer added: “Following the success of last year’s competition, it has been really impressive to see how keen the students have been to take part this year. The quality of all of the student’s ideas, presentations and designs have shown me how enthusiastic they are about their local environment. They have really worked hard throughout this project and fully deserve their awards.

“I look forward to developing more community projects in partnership with local schools or youth groups, and would love to hear from anyone who would like to work with Young Shrewsbury on similar projects in future.”
