Artistic Fun at Shrewsbury’s Quarry

A stallholder from Shrewsbury’s indoor market will be swapping her usual location for the picturesque surroundings of the Quarry this week.

Sam Pooley, who runs Compost Kids, will be hosting her usual daily art classes for youngsters at the Quarry Bandstand from 10am until 5pm today [WEDS], tomorrow [THURS] and Friday.

Two classes for children over the age of five, and for those under five-years-old, will run together.

Sessions start on the hour every hour throughout the day.

The Bird’s Nest Café will deliver cake and coffee orders direct to the Quarry. Orders will be taken at the beginning of each class.

Places can be booked in advance or turn up on the day.

The hour class costs £6 for one child and £3 for a second sibling.

Sam said: “The Quarry seemed like the perfect place to get creative outdoors. We’ll be looking at the architecture surrounding the Quarry during our classes and we will be creating masterpieces for participants to take home taking inspiration from Antoni Gaudi, Luis Barragan and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Hopefully the weather will be kind but if the worst comes to the worst we will move our classes back to our usual spot at the Market Hall which is only a short walk from the Bandstand.”

Mike Cox, Outdoor Recreation and Assets Manager for Shrewsbury Town Council, which manages the Quarry said: “When Sam approached the Town Council to bring her art classes outdoors we thought it was a great idea and an excellent use of the bandstand area during the day. We’re keeping our fingers crossed the weather holds out and the children have lots of fun!”

In the event of inclement weather classes will move back to the Market Hall.

Normal classes at the market resume next week when the theme will be to help create the Compost Kids float for the Shrewsbury Carnival which has been inspired by Vivienne Westwood. For more information call Sam on 07531 824561 or visit www.markethallshrewsbury.co.uk
