Shrewsbury Town Council opens community grants round

Shrewsbury Town Council is inviting local community groups, clubs and charities to apply for its latest round of community grant funding.

The Council’s community grants scheme supports organisations that make a positive difference to life in Shrewsbury – helping them to develop new projects, continue essential services or secure matched funding for larger initiatives.

Funding is available for a wide range of activities, from improving community facilities and supporting young people, to promoting wellbeing, inclusion and environmental projects.

Applications for the latest round must be submitted by 1pm on Tuesday 17 November 2026.

One organisation to benefit from community grant funding earlier this year was SY Gigs, which received £1,400 towards the development of six immersive events taking place throughout 2026.

SY Gigs is a not-for-profit community initiative that prides itself on bringing artists from different genres and countries to Shrewsbury, offering audiences something different from the town’s already strong music offering. It aims to push boundaries and create curiosity through its events, providing music and mindful experiences that can support wellbeing and offer a positive space for people living with anxiety and other mental health challenges.

Chris Taylor from SY Gigs said the funding had been gratefully received and had helped make the events easier to run, while also allowing the organisation to keep ticket prices reasonably priced at a time when many people are facing cost of living pressures.

SY Gigs held its most recent event on Sunday 4 October, welcoming Norwegian folk artist Juni Habel to perform. The event was sold out.

Chris Taylor, from SY Gigs, said:

The grant from Shrewsbury Town Council was gratefully received and has helped to make the events easier to run. Pop up events have an intrinsically high set up cost.

It has helped us to keep our tickets reasonably priced, which is particularly important at the moment with the pressures that people are facing with the cost of living.

We’re proud to be able to bring different artists and types of music to some of Shrewsbury’s most historic spaces. The support from the Town Council has helped us to continue developing these events.”

Helen Ball, Town Clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council, said:

Shrewsbury is home to an incredible range of community groups who give their time, energy and passion to supporting others.

This grant scheme is one of the ways we can recognise that commitment and help organisations deliver projects that have a real, lasting impact for local residents.

SY Gigs is a great example of the variety of projects that community grant funding can support. From providing new cultural experiences to helping people access music and events, these projects can make a real difference to life in our town.

We encourage other groups to apply and share their ideas for how they can benefit our town.”

To be eligible, organisations must be formally constituted, with a Constitution or Set of Rules, have a bank account and hold Public Liability Insurance. Applications should clearly demonstrate how the project will benefit residents of Shrewsbury.

All applications will be assessed on their individual merits. Grant requests of more than £3,000 are unlikely to be successful.

The deadline for applications is 1pm on Tuesday 17 November 2026.
