A South Staffordshire man who has turned a life-changing diagnosis into an inspiring fundraising challenge is being recognised by Shrewsbury Town Council after raising more than £3,500 for Amyloidosis UK.
John Tett, from Brood, was diagnosed with Amyloidosis at the age of 76 – a rare condition caused by abnormal proteins building up in the body's organs, affecting how they function. Often described as a "hidden illness", Amyloidosis can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms such as extreme fatigue and sleeplessness are often mistaken for other conditions.
Determined to raise awareness of the disease and help others receive an earlier diagnosis, John set himself the ambitious challenge of walking 600 kilometres in 90 days while raising vital funds for Amyloidosis UK.
His campaign began with his first-ever 5km Parkrun before embarking on the three-month challenge. Along the way, John has shared his progress to encourage conversations about Amyloidosis, proving that a diagnosis does not have to mean standing still.
As part of his fundraising journey, John and his wife, Pam, visited Shrewsbury in July where they completed a walk around the town while carrying out a litter pick. The pair combined their fundraising efforts with helping to keep the county town looking its best, demonstrating the same community spirit that has inspired supporters throughout John's challenge.
John's family say their mission extends beyond fundraising. They hope to bring Amyloidosis "out of the shadows" by increasing public awareness, supporting research into earlier detection and showing that people living with the condition can continue to make a positive difference.

With every kilometre walked, John is helping more people learn about Amyloidosis while raising funds for research, patient support and improved awareness of this rare disease. His campaign has already inspired hundreds of supporters and continues to grow as he reaches new milestones.
