Shrewsbury Town Council is aware of the recent erection of Union and St George flags attached to street lighting columns and other items of street furniture across parts of Shrewsbury and neighbouring communities.
The Council acknowledges the statement issued on Friday 10th April by Shropshire Council, as Highway Authority, confirming that unauthorised flags will be removed due to safety concerns associated with attachments to highway infrastructure.
Shrewsbury is a proud market town with a strong heritage and civic identity. The Town Council recognises the Union Flag as an important national symbol, widely respected by residents, veterans and communities across the United Kingdom. The Council follows the national guidance on officially displaying flags on Civic buildings and designated flagpoles.
When displayed appropriately and with dignity, it represents the shared values and history of our country. However, the Town Council does not support the unauthorised attachment of flags or any other objects to street lighting columns, highway infrastructure or other public street furniture.
Shrewsbury Town Council is responsible for its own buildings, property and assets across the town. Any flags or other items attached to Town Council buildings, structures or assets without permission will be removed.
Shrewsbury Town Council will continue to work with Shropshire Council and other partners to maintain welcoming and safe public spaces, while supporting a community that values mutual respect, civic pride and the responsible display of national symbols.
