New Look, New Names: Shrewsbury Town Council Unveils Street Sweeper Design Celebrating the Town

Shrewsbury Town Council has officially unveiled the new look for its street sweeping vehicles, featuring a striking new street cleaning logo with a bespoke vector design showcasing iconic elements of Shrewsbury.

The design was created by local graphic designer Alison Staples of Romy Design, based in Shrewsbury Market Hall, she developed a piece of artwork that would represent the town while being highly visible on the two street sweeping vehicles that clean more than 600 miles of roads, footpaths and cycle lanes across Shrewsbury.

Working in partnership with local company Sign and Poster, the Town Council oversaw the production and installation of the vehicle wraps, creating a distinctive visual identity for the street cleaning service. Sign and Poster also applied the names to each vehicle, which had been kept under wraps since residents voted for their favourites shortly after the street cleaning team began operations in April.

The Town Council announced that the 15-tonne road sweeper has been officially named "Sweep Caroline", while the 3.5-tonne road sweeper, has been named "Optimus Grime". Both names were selected following a public vote, giving residents the opportunity to play a part in the new service.

The launch marks another milestone for Shrewsbury Town Council's street cleaning service, which began operating on 1 April 26 following the transfer of responsibilities for street cleaning across the town. The dedicated team is responsible for litter picking, bin emptying, mechanical street sweeping and graffiti removal, helping to maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout Shrewsbury.

Alison Staples, Graphic Designer at Romy Design, said:

"I am incredibly proud to have had the opportunity to partner with Shrewsbury Town Council on this project. As a local designer, it was important to create something that reflects the character and identity of our town while also being practical and eye-catching on the vehicles. Seeing the finished sweepers out on the streets of Shrewsbury is a fantastic feeling, and I hope residents will enjoy spotting elements of the town represented in the design."

Helen Ball, Town Clerk, Shrewsbury Town Council, said:

"These vehicles are a visible symbol of the Town Council's commitment to keeping Shrewsbury clean, welcoming and attractive for residents and visitors alike. I would like to thank everyone involved in bringing this project to life, from the street cleaning team and council officers to Alison Staples and Sign and Poster. Most importantly, I want to thank our hardworking street cleaning operatives who are making a real difference in communities across Shrewsbury every day. Their dedication and pride in their work is helping to create a cleaner town for everyone."

Shrewsbury Town Council's street cleaning service operates seven days a week and is responsible for emptying more than 500 litter bins across the town, maintaining public spaces and delivering a comprehensive street cleaning programme designed to keep Shrewsbury looking its best.

The newly branded vehicles, Sweep Caroline and Optimus Grime, will now be a familiar sight across the town as the team continues its work to enhance the environment and support community pride throughout Shrewsbury.
